On March 6, Finnish thrash metal band Lost Society released their sixth studio album Hell Is a State of Mind. I discovered the band in 2022, when they were special guests on the Blind Channel tour. In the same year they released the album If the Sky Came Down. I listened to it a lot, and it became one of my favorite albums in all my music collection. It also has a special place in my music collection.

Hell Is a State of Mind is a new chapter and a new era for the band with a powerful and explosive sound. The guys added not only strings to their music, but also other interesting elements. The band also shared that a real orchestra from Germany took part in the recording. It sounds very big and impressive.

However, the first single Dead People Scare Me (But the Living Make Me Sick), which was released in May last year, didn’t have strings, and the sound felt more familiar to me.

That is why I was very surprised when I first heard Blood Diamond, the second single. I usually don’t like strings in metal, but here they sound very modern and fit the music really well. It’s almost impossible to stop the track.

The album starts with the song Afterlife. It has powerful guitars, aggressive rap parts, and some strings in the background. This combination sounds amazing.

However, the song that impressed me the most is probably the third track called Synthetic. For some people it may sound like there are too many things happening and it can feel a bit chaotic, but the sound is very interesting. I’ve never heard anything like this before. You can hear some elements of early 2000s nu metal, different electronic effects, powerful guitars, and extreme vocals that feel very intense. At the same time, all these elements fit the title of the song perfectly. It’s brilliant!

All the tracks feel very cinematic. For some reason, fantasy images appear in my head, like I am watching a movie, even though this usually does not happen to me. I think Lost Society and their producer Joonas Parkkonen managed to create a dark and powerful atmosphere.

The album also ends in a very powerful way, although at the beginning of the last track it sounds like it could be a metal ballad. The title track Hell Is a State of Mind has a very interesting structure. The verse sounds so powerful, like the earth is breaking into two parts. Then there is a very melodic and calm chorus, and it feels like everything is over. But it’s only an illusion, because suddenly the earth starts breaking again and a strong earthquake begins. After that the slow part returns. At this moment you understand that this will continue again and again, so you cannot relax. On the outside everything looks calm, but inside there is hell.

The album is quite diverse and very layered. It’s very different from the previous one, and for some reason this feels strange to some people. But maybe they just don’t hear the main theme that connects all ten tracks — the rebirth of yourself through music. It feels like a new beginning after the story told in the previous album.

To sum up, I want to say that Lost Society have become a very special band for me — one of the bands I always trust. I’m sure that the music they released before and the music they will release in the future will always be high quality, clear, and honest. And I know I will like it, because the guys just don’t know how to make bad music.
